Lessons from the Trail
Walking downhill often feels easy.
There is a rhythm to it that almost takes over. Your stride lengthens. Your pace quickens without much effort. The path may even feel flat at times, as if you are simply moving forward instead of descending.
Gravity does most of the work.
It is only when you pause and turn around that you realize how far you have come down. What felt gradual suddenly looks steep and the elevation you lost becomes visible.
I have noticed that the trail rarely announces the shift. There is no clear marker that says, you are now descending. It happens gradually, step by step.
Organizations can drift the same way.
Rarely does a culture drift all at once. It is not a single decision or moment that causes it. Instead, it is a series of small allowances. A conversation that goes unaddressed. A process that is bypassed “just this once.” A decision that feels easier in the moment, even if it does not fully align with what we said we value.
None of these feel significant on their own. In fact, most of them may feel reasonable. That is what makes them so easy to miss.
Over time, those small shifts begin to accumulate. What was once an exception becomes more familiar. What once felt misaligned begins to feel normal. Progress still appears to be happening. Work is still getting done. The organization continues moving forward.
But direction is not the same as movement.
The challenge is cultural drift often does not feel like failure. It feels like progress. It feels like momentum. It feels like keeping things moving when the alternative might feel slower or more difficult.
And just like the trail, it is hard to recognize while you are in it.
It often takes a pause to see it. A moment to look back at where you started. To reflect on what once mattered most. To notice the subtle ways those priorities may have shifted over time.
Sometimes the realization is faint. Other times, it is more jarring.
You look back and wonder how certain things became acceptable. How certain practices became routine. How a culture that once felt intentional now feels slightly off course.
Not broken.
Just… different.
Leadership lives in those moments of awareness.
Not in assigning blame or reacting to a single decision, but in noticing patterns. In recognizing when the path has changed, even if only slightly. In being willing to pause long enough to ask whether the direction still reflects what matters most.
Because the longer the descent continues, the harder it becomes to climb back.
